Many people with physical disabilities experience problems with mobility, which can make it difficult for them to live in disabled independence, get out and about and carry out everyday activities.
Is there any help available for people with mobility problems?
There is a great deal of help available for people with mobility problems. There is a range of equipment, which can be used to help people get around and carry out everyday activities and many people also benefit from additional help from nurses or carers who can help with things around the house or getting out and about.
Financial assistance for people with mobility problems
To qualify for the mobility component of the Disability Living Allowance, an individual must fit certain criteria. These include:
- The individual is virtually unable to walk and experiences pain and discomfort when they do try and walk
- The individual has no feet or legs
- The individual has severe mental health problems and requires round the clock care
- The individual has severe hearing and sight impairments and must be accompanied if they go out
People with more minor disabilities may still be eligible for Disability Living Allowance, but you should contact your local authority to find out more information.
Help with disabled independence
Many people with disabilities rely on mobility aids to help them get around the house and get out and about; examples of mobility aids include:
- Wheelchairs
- Electric wheelchairs
- Mobility scooters
- Walking aids (including walking sticks and walking frames)
